Freedom Bird / Bering Sea Waters Alaska
Photographer or fisherman, which came first for Corey Arnold? Guessing by the shark catching photos of him as a toddler, fishing started quite young. Corey is a wonderful example of photographers that 'Do', meaning the fact that he has worked in the commercial fishing industry for 8 years and established a true understanding of his environment, and the people and creatures that inhabit it, enables his photography to document and tell incredible stories.

Loneliness / Bering Sea Waters Alaska
Corey is Portland based but his work means long durations of living in the demanding life out at sea in Alaska. His work is a collection of documentary photography and some staged when neccesary to convey emotions that can not always be achieved in candid shots. Corey explains in an interview for OPB this self portrait was taken when he wanted to illustrate the lonliness there is sometimes when you have been working out at sea for months, and the closeness of the relationship that fishermen have with their constant environment. (I am impressed however that you can keep a pet cat out at sea)
'It's an escape from real life', He talks about the tension there can be between the two worlds he lives in, the art world and the harsh manual labour world of crab fishing. It's a hard environment and to have a way into photograph this you have to gain respect as one of the team, shifts of 16hr manual labour in some of the most intense weather conditions. All hands on deck, must be quite hard at times to decide when its ok to use your hands on the shutter.
Corey exhibited his show FISH-WORK: The Bering Sea , earlier this year and published the book 'The Bering Sea', and theres a brilliant interview with Corey talking through some of the collection.
